Community
of Caring, Monterey Peninsula (CCMP) provides leadership and
support in building a culture of caring that
enhances the quality of life on the Monterey Peninsula where we share the
message that,
“ Caring is contagious—let’s
pass it on."
For
10 years, CCMP has been a catalyst in realizing the vision of a more
cooperative and compassionate culture on the Monterey Peninsula. CCMP was
the 2004 Recipient
of the “Child Abuse Prevention Council” (CAPC) Community
Service Award by providing opportunities for people and organizations
to communicate
and collaborate in serving Peninsula youth. Our programs and resources
directly benefit the community through cooperative involvement of youth,
businesses,
nonprofit professionals, and civic organizations in promoting a healthy
set of norms: Caring, Respect, Trust, Responsibility and Family.
Our
activities lead directly to community service projects where youth and
adults put
these
values into real action and thereby experience the joy of giving to
others in service. Through all our programs, the key message is that everyone
in a community can make a difference.

Current
Community of Caring Programs
• The
After School Values Training and Integrated Community Service Program,
a project in partnership with Monterey Peninsula Unified School District
is training 37 teachers and staff in a curriculum connecting children
with opportunities for putting the five norms into action, including
discussions, group activities, and community service projects. Currently
eight after-school sites are involved, touching over 800 children in
grades 1- 8.
• Generation
Monterey Bay (GenMB.net) is
an interactive website targeting local youth in grades 8 though 11.
Designed by and for teens, the site features links to information
on activities, jobs, education, and health resources. In addition,
GenMB is a forum for sharing creativity, encouraging teens to share
their original art, photography, poetry, writing, and music through
an online submission process. This website is a safe and positive
space to celebrate what teens are doing in the community, with special
emphasis on community service and creativity.
• Lend
a Hand Teen
Volunteer Training and Management Program, a project
in development, will serve as a clearinghouse for teen volunteers
to link with meaningful community service projects. There are 80,000
to 100,000 teen volunteer hours available annually as more Peninsula
high schools and middle schools incorporate community service into
their graduation requirements. This Program is designed to maximize
our teen resources by providing training and brokering of meaningful
assignments with non- profit agencies, homebound elderly, disabled
and disadvantaged families, just to name a few!
• Dare
to Care Day in April is a one day celebration event
focused on the message that “Caring is contagious—let’s
pass it on” where community members are encouraged to participate
in a variety of service projects and acts of kindness such as a disabled
Veterans’ fishing derby, planting trees, taking dinner to a
neighbor, or cleaning up a beach.
• The
CCMP network listserv comprised of 250 members in
over 180 local organizations concerned with enhancing the values,
quality of life and efficiency of services throughout the Monterey
Peninsula nurtures our programs year round. Periodically, this group
has networking forums and training events, which support and reinforce
the many nonprofits, public agencies, and businesses that are committed
to our vision of a caring community in which resources are used efficiently
by many collaborating partners with a clear and positive role for
youth participation.
